Acts 2 United Methodist Church is a dream becoming a reality through the vision of Rev. Mark Foster and the leadership of the United Methodist Church in Oklahoma. In 1999, more than 250,000 Oklahoma United Methodists decided to support a new church for the growing area of northwest Edmond, Deer Creek, and north Oklahoma City. Thirty-five acres at the corner of Pennsylvania and Covell were purchased in the spring of 1999. The church began with young families and little children worshipping on Saturday nights in a variety of rented spaces. First, Acts 2 met at a local Disciples of Christ church on NW 178th, then at Edmond North High School (November 1999 – May 2001), and finally at Cheyenne Middle School (June 2001 – June 2006).
Acts 2 became an officially recognized “chartered” church September 9th, 2001 with approximately 100 members. The first worship service held in our new permanent facility was in July of 2006 at 4848 West Covell at 10am. Soon the worship space of 242 chairs became full and we increased to two worship services on Sunday mornings, at 9:15am and 10:45am. One year later, those services were full and we added a third service to reach our current schedule of 8:30am, 10:00am, and 11:30am.
Acts 2 has added a full-time minister each of the last three years to continue to disciple and care for our growing congregation. We regularly worship between 350 – 450 people on a Sunday, but it is wonderful to be a part of a large church with a small church feel. Acts 2 also started an off-site worship service to serve the elderly community at “Edmond Mansions.” We hope to begin other off-site worship opportunities to better reach people for Jesus Christ. We also plan to expand our current facilities to better serve our growing community.
